04Kimigayo54 is the title of the Japanese national anthem. It means "The Reign of Our Emperor". The words for the anthem are from an ancient poem. The lyrics are so brief that they are sung twice. The author is unknown.
In 1860, Englishman John William Fenton, the first bandmaster of the Japanese Army, composed a melody for Kimigayo. His melody was used until 1881, when a committee searched for new music more suitable for traditional Japanese instruments. The committee chose a composition by Hiromori Hayashi, a Court musician. The music was later revised to harmonize with the Western musical scale.
The Hayashi version of the anthem was first performed at the Imperial Court on November 3, 1880, at the Emperor's birthday. Kimigayo officially became Japan's national anthem in 1888.
